  • Fun Seattle Things: Viking Days

Thanks to a recent DNA test I learned that I’m 22% Scandanavian. I can’t help but think this is exceptionally cool because I’m a huge Vikings fan and history geek. So, when I heard about the Nordic Heritage Museum’s Viking Days how could I pass up the chance to check out some of my genetic history (and score some incredible food)?

One of my favorite exhibits was the Nordic Spirit, the newly-restored 200-year-old replica of a Viking ship. Prior to it’s restoration The Nordic Spirit had been sitting in storage. The museum and Pacific Fishermen Shipyard saved it!

There were lots of really cool things to look at. I was struck by the attention to detail.

These ladies were cooking something wrapped in bacon. It smelled insanely amazing.

    Everyone can viking. 😉

I really want to learn how to weave! This is a table loom. This style isn’t seen/used very much any more.

Another favorite? This bored dog faithfully “protecting” his mom whilst she spun roving into yarn.

Historically Ballard is the traditional center of Seattle’s ethnically Scandinavian seafaring community, who were drawn here by the fishing industry and opportunities. In recent years population growth (and decline in the fishing industry) has decreased the proportion of Scandinavian residents here, but we are still very proud of our community’s Nordic history. I’m really glad I got the opportunity to support the Nordic Heritage Museum, which celebrates both the community of Ballard and local Scandinavian history.

  • My 2015 Reading List (So Far): Books I’ve Loved, Hated, and Meh’d

As you may recall at the beginning of the year I set myself with the task of reading from a few specific books in 2015. Since we’re more than half way through the year I thought I’d report on my progress so far.

“The List” Books I’ve Read in 2015

    • All the Light We Cannot See: A Novel by Anthony Doerr. I confess I didn’t find this one as captivating or interesting as I hoped I would. I ended up putting it down in favor of something new.

Books I’ve Read in 2015 (That weren’t on “The List”)

    • Ready Player One by Ernest Cline. My favorite book this year. So good, in fact, I was angry at my friends for not telling me about it sooner. If you love geeky stuff, computer/video games, and/or 80’s culture give this one a go. You’ll love it.
    • The Martian by Andy Weir. Think Castaway meets Apollo 13 meets The Things They Carried. This is a great read, and Weir’s ability to make technical, scientific detail interesting is very reminiscent of Tim O’Brien’s writing style. At first I was a little upset that they chose Matt Damon to play Mark Watney, but then I saw this teaser “behind-the-scenes” trailer and I’m a little less grumpy about the choice.

    • The Fold by Peter Clines. Remember the movie Event Horizon? It scared the CRAP out of me when I was younger and this novel has a very similar premise: Scientists invent a machine that can fold time/space so that moving across distances is as simple stepping through a door. As you can imagine, doom and gloom ensue. This one is a must read for scifi fans who have already finished Ready Player One and The Martian.
    • Fog Island Mountains . This one got great reviews, but I’m not gonna lie. I couldn’t finish it. It was a little too depressing for me. I’m sure I’ll pick it up again in the future.
    • The Girl on the Train: A Novel by Paula Hawkins. The protagonist of this mystery/thriller novel is as unreliable as narrators come. Half the time reading this one I found myself practically shouting at Rachel, “NO! Why would you do that?!!” “OMG, are you completely crazy?” “Whyyyyyyyyy???” She does everything she shouldn’t and then some. Reading this novel is just like driving by a car crash. You simply can’t look away. You can’t stop reading. You just HAVE to see the root of her damage.
    • The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up by Maria Condo. Maria Condo is crazy. She almost lost me with the whole “socks have feelings” business, but I persevered because she is also a straight-up genius. My drawers and closets have never been this majestic. My socks “feel” better, and I actually take pride in opening my closets and drawers (crazy, right?). Even my scarf collection is color coordinated (if you know me even a little, you know that this is awe-inspiring).
    • The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern. Sigh. Swoon. Wow. The circus theme threw me off, so I avoided reading this one despite being told about it’s awesomeness by numerous people. I’m glad I finally caved. This is one of those “I wish I could read it for the first time again” novels, and my #2 favorite for the year. If you haven’t, do yourself a favor and read this one.

The New List (Books I want to finish in 2015):

    • Armada (Ernest Cline) – I loved Ready Player One so much, I’m pumped for Cline’s next book.

Well, that’s my list! I’m curious — what are you planning to read next year? Do you have any recommendations for me? Tweet or leave a comment. Happy Reading!

  • Infographic: Know The 5 Types of Awareness on the Buyer’s Journey

Depending on your customer’s stage of awareness, they will need different content and messaging.

    TypesOfAwareness

Completely Unaware customers need content that informs and enlightens.

Is your customer Pain Aware?  Provide solutions to their pain, or even shine a light on the pain itself.

Problem Aware customers are seeing a solution.  Help them solve it with content that provides a solution.

Some have done their homework and have an answer in mind. Solution Aware folks are looking for a road map or the best way to implement a solution. They respond to high-level benefits.

Brand/Product Aware people want to know more about your product specifically. How is it different from other products? What is the biggest benefit to using your product? What can you offer? They love a good, “But wait, there’s more!”

  • New App! Introducing Layout from Instagram

Ever wonder how to get more than one image into a single Instagram post? For years casual and power Instagram users alike have been using third party apps and tools to create photo collages for Instagram.

Today Instagram finally announced they’ve created their own solution. I took some time to use Layout this morning and I have to say I’m really impressed. Layout is NOT your average, run-of-the-mill layout tool. It’s easily the best I’ve used so far, and I’ve tried dozens!

To learn more about Layout from Instagram visit Instagram.

Layout is currently available on iOS devices and will come to Android, “in the coming months”.

BONUS NEWS: Clicking on hashtags on Instagram for the Web now brings users to pages containing all photos and videos posted publicly with those hashtags.

  • Freelancing in Seattle: San Francisco Edition

    Gotta love San Francisco.

Cheesy selfie to celebrate a new project.

    Brisk walk through Chinatown.

    Love.

And a present for hubs with my remaining time.

  • Twitter Growth Hack: Flock to Unlock

Flock to Unlock campaigns aren’t really new, but they are becoming an interesting way to sell inventory quickly while growing awareness for your brand’s Twitter account.

    What is it?

Flock to Unlock is a contest or promotion that is exclusive to your brand’s Twitter audience. The point of the promotion is to have a certain number of retweets happen in order for exclusive deals, contests, and content to be unlocked.

    What is it good for?

Twitter says that Flock to Unlock campaigns not only activate your fans, but will also help you find new fans. Plus, these campaigns help make room for new inventory quickly.

    Who is doing this?

Right now e-tailers like AlternativePumaBonobos are having success with Flock to Unlock campaigns. Below are a few tweets from Bonobos’ Flock to Unlock campaign.

First they teased the sale and built up a little anticipation a few days in advance:

    https://twitter.com/Bonobos/status/119433929731215360

On the day of the sale, Bonobos promoted their tweets to help boost awareness.

After 49 tweets the sale went live.

You can read the entire campaign tweet by tweet on Twitter’s website. They claim this promotion had 1200% ROI and lead to 100 first time buyers for Bonobos.

Across the board my clients have been noticing impressive organic reach when it comes to posting video to Facebook. In some cases, video posts have had 4-5 times the organic reach of their picture and link counterparts– amazing!

If you haven’t considered it already, I highly recommend you start creating more videos for your marketing efforts. In fact, email me if you’re interested in creating a video campaign for your organization.

Also, don’t forget you can now create and share video playlists on Facebook.

    This Week’s Link Inspiration:

    • Speaking of cool new things, Buffer just came out with a new image creation tool called ‘Pablo’. Check it out. With Pablo and Canva in your back pocket, it is now easier than ever to make your posts look more interesting.
    • AdWeek reports that a JC Penney video campaign got startlingly good results on Twitter. Sean Ryan, director of social media at JCPenney, wrote, “the native placement was much more effective in cost per view … marketers now need to think across the board when it comes to promoting video.
    • It’s not video, but I’d feel remiss if I didn’t mention this really cool, curated showcase of Really Good Email designs from MailChimp. Lots of inspiration to be had!

Lastly, speaking of awesome video, have you seen This is Water?. If not, give it a watch!
